GIS FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows software. This workshop introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to local government managers, staff, and other public officials. Learn about the capabilities and the advantages GIS can provide in everyday decision making. GIS technology can help you take innovative approaches in solving complex problems. It provides a way to compile spatial data from various sources and to organize, update, and analyze this data within a shorter period of time. Some common GIS applications in local government are land use and zoning analysis, crime analysis, land suitability study, and emergency management. You will have hands-on experience on introductory GIS mapping, data collection, editing, and analysis. An overview of hardware, software, and budget of developing and maintaining a GIS will be also provided.
