Fairy tales have been described as a kind of secular scripture. The stories of Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, and more, come to provide a shared cultural frame of reference for ideas about politics, social class, gender and behavioral norms. This course is the first in a series and will focus on the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood. We will identify assumptions that have historically characterized dominant versions of the tales, and explore contemporary retellings in short stories, films and novels that backtalk those assumptions.
