Mahler said that tradition is the keeping of the flame, not the worship of the ashes. Kafka, Mahler and Nietzsche, three suffering geniuses, interpreted the flame of creativity differently. They left us hanging in clouds of social, philosophical and religious disenchantment, while giving birth to a personal, unfettered hopefulness. Each possessed a powerful ego, which made sublime achievement possible. Nietzeche’s Übermensch, the “Kafkaesque” style of writing and Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand are now contemporary extremes.
